There are a variety of Library programs on offer throughout Darwin, Palmerston and the rural areas.

We are very lucky to have four public library located in Darwin City and the Northern Suburbs, another library located in Palmerston at Goyder Square and also Taminimin Community Library located in the rural area of Humpty Doo.

From Coding, STEAM, Lego clubs, Storytimes for families and younger children, Darwin Family Life has wrapped up all the details below.

Darwin has four city libraries located in Darwin and the Northern Suburbs.

Darwin City Library (Civic Centre, Harry Chan Avenue) Limited parking and parking fees may apply.

Casuarina Library (17 Bradshaw Terrace, Casuarina) Parking available, time limits applicable

Karama Library (Karama Shopping Centre, 37 Kalymnos Drive, Karama) Plenty of carparking

Nightcliff Library (10-12 Pavonia Place, Nightcliff) Plenty of parking

Darwin libraries have a variety of programs for babies, children and teens as outlined below.

Story times at Darwin libraries

The City of Darwin libraries has a few different children’s story times available depending on your childs age.

  • Baby Book Time* – for ages 3 to 12 months and their grownups
  • Rhyme Time* – for ages 3-24 months and their grownups
  • Toddler Time* – for ages 1-3 years and their grownups
  • Preschool Story Time* – for ages 3-5 years and their grownups
  • Family Story Time* – all ages welcome

STEAM Zone

STEAM Zone is a fun, engaging session that explores different educational themes and activities each week. It is suitable for people of all ages. Young children may need an adult helper. Alternate Fridays at Casuarina library there is Lego Club or STEAM zone from 3.30pm to 4.30pm

Coding and Robotics Club

Coding and Robotics Club is an interactive club designed to encourage children to learn through exploring a variety of computer programming languages, software, and robotics. The content is aimed at beginner coders aged 8 years and above.  Coding and Robotics Club is free. No need to book, just come along. Club sessions run in six-week blocks during school term. Run on a Thursday at Casuarina Library from 3.30 to 4.30pm.

STEAM zone

GEEK UP – Sundays at Casuarina Library 

Looking for an inclusive and friendly space to play games, practice your art and connect with new people?
Geek Up is a FREE event for young people held on the last Sunday of the month at Casuarina Library. There are three activities on offer:
* Board Games with The GG Social Club
* Dungeons & Dragons with Grimm
* Digital art with a different guest artist each month
PLUS a DIY toastie station. Geek Up has been created by young people for young people and is recommended for ages 15-25.
Gaming After Darwin – Fridays at Casuarina Library -6.30pm-8.30pm
Gaming After Dark is a safe, action-packed and inclusive place for young people aged 12-17 to hang out with friends, play casual setups and compete in low stakes esports competitions. Gaming After Dark is for young people aged 12-17. Snacks provided. FREE!
Dates for the remainder of 2024: 25 October & 29 November.

City Of Palmerston Library (Goyder Square, Palmerston)                                 8935 9999

Gadgets and Games – Tuesdays 3.30pm – 4.30pm

Gadgets and Games is a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) inspired program where children aged 5 – 14 years of age can explore and create using robots, electronics, gaming devices, Roblox, puzzles and/or board games while unwinding and connecting with others. Gadgets and Games runs weekly on Tuesdays and no bookings required.

Code Club – Saturdays 10am-1pm

Code Club is about fun, creativity and learning through exploring, and is a nationwide network of free, volunteer-led, after school coding clubs for children aged 9-12 years. All volunteers have current Ochre Cards. Code Club is free but places are limited. Registration is essential. Register by phoning 8935 9999 or email askus@palmerston.nt.gov.au

Nurserytime (0-1yr olds) – Wednesdays 10am – 10:45am

Palmerston Library Nurserytime involves songs, puppets, nursery rhymes and movement chosen specifically to enhance your baby’s early literacy development.

Taminimin Community Library (70 Challoner Circuit, Humpty Doo)                      8988 1200

The Taminmin Community library is found inside the Taminmin College grounds, members of the public are welcome.

Nurserytime (0 to 1 years) – Wednesdays 10:30am

Nurserytime at Taminmin has baby books, songs, nursery rhymes, fingerplay, puppets and activities for all the babies to enjoy. It’s also a great opportunity for parents and carers to get out of the house and meet other families in the rural community. Nurserytime is recommended for 0-12 months and held every Wednesday at 10:30am.

Storytime (1 to 5 years) – Thursdays 10:30am

Every Thursday let’s share stories, singing, nursery rhymes, puppets, dancing and occasional special guests. Afterwards, we also enjoy a new craft activity each week. Storytimes are recommended for 1-5yrs and held every Thursday at 10:30am.

Litchfield Lego League – Wednesdays 3:30pm

The popular LEGO Club is held every Wednesday 3:30pm-4:30pm. There will be loads of bricks for creative building, LEGO interactive robots (10+years), regular STEM or special projects, lots of kits to make

We provide all you need to share fun or creative builds with your child or family. Suitable for 5+ years. Great parent and child activity. This is a FREE event and bookings are not required.

*Always check with the library to ensure the program is still operating the same time/days as these can frequently change.
